As the trend of heating changes evolves, heat pumps are undeniably viewed as the next big thing in the heating industry- a reliable and renewable heat source without any carbon footprint. But are they? Yes, and like this post outlines, several governments are also promoting their use to eradicate the use of gas boilers and traditional fossil fuels that leave a carbon footprint. You will also learn more reasons that evidence the prominent use of heat pumps in major European nations.

But first.

What Is an Air Source Heat Pump?

Air source heat pumps are forms of renewable energy sources that operate by absorbing external heat to increase the temperature inside your house. Ideally, air heat pumps are like standard air conditioners. To install these 'box-shaped' units, you usually fit them on the side of your home/property. The size of an ASHP depends on the amount of energy you generate for your house.

While air-source heat pumps appear to be a rather massive unit, they cause minimal disruption. Both air and ground source pumps usually maintain a consistent temperature across the entire day, unlike traditional boilers, to maintain a low, warm temperature in your home over an extensive period. Many of these units are custom-built with noise reduction and have a 'Quiet Mark' certification to ensure your home remains unaware of the background operating pump.

EPC Ratings reflect it

The future for air source heat pumps is now and in the near future, and it's time EPC ratings reflect that. The pending Energy Performance Certificate rating review outlined in The Times outlines the positive effect air source heat pumps bring on the overall home's energy performance. With a heat pump, you can use renewable energy sources like solar and wind to power your home's heating and cooling.

EPC ratings are usually based on heating hourly costs and therefore don't accurately reflect the importance of heat pumps. These units offer homes a cleaner, greener, and affordable heat source. While upfront costs can be somewhat daunting, grants and schemes are now established to help homeowners offset these costs over seven years.

Better yet, with payments amounting to £1300 per year for an extensive seven-year period after installation, it's hard to deny that air source heat pumps are a realistic option for multiple homes across the world.

Government Incentives for heat pump installation

With the continued growth of the industry and the availability of other renewable technologies, the price of air source heat pumps is expected to fall. In fact, they are cheaper than LPG and oil boilers, making them the future of heating and cooling.

For instance, the UK government is now offering incentives to help the public improve their energy efficiency. Although the expense of replacing your traditional boiler with a modern heat pump can appear quite expensive and perhaps somewhat daunting, there are incentives and Government schemes established to assist offset the overall installation cost.

The RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) scheme pays back the overall installation costs over seven years. In some instances, households are paid back somewhat more than the money they initially invested in their heat pump.

The RHI offers £6,000 in quarterly payouts over a seven-year period in efforts to defray heat pump costs. UK ministers are considering replacing a modern £400m boiler scrappage system that would potentially offer £7,000 grants.

In the UK last year alone, approximately 36,000 heat pumps were installed as outlined by the Heat Pump Association, with the figures expected to double this year to around 70,000 units. Boris Johnson set a remarkable target of 600,000 yearly installations by 2028.

Zero-carbon footprint advantage

A renewable and reliable heat source, ASHP boasts a near non-existent carbon footprint that has inspired many activists to promote heat pumps use across our properties.

Homes fitted with heat pumps enjoy significant heat-saving advantages since they save substantial amounts in their energy expenses. Fully exploiting the efficiency of heat pumps can save an ordinary home about 40% of the current heating system costs. Ideally, ASHP is 75% renewable energy and 25% electricity content-no gas usage.

Heating needs across the UK now make up about 14% of the overall carbon emission contribution. Imagine then, for new future homes attaining 0% emission (emission-free! So, what of the existing houses already boasting with traditional heating solutions like gas boilers or oil?

Proposed Government Ban On Gas Boiler Use

Typically, among the most significant pollution contributors is common in our lives. Although often overlooked: the traditional fossil fuels we use in our homes for cooking and heating contribute to over a fifth of the overall UK carbon emission. If you didn't know, the standard fuels we use in our homes for heating and warming build a carbon burden. However, units that capture ambient heat may offer an alternative.

In the current era, environmental protection and energy-saving are always considered. Air source heat pumps in Europe have been gradually developed to replace coal and other fossil fuels. This is ideally why the government seeks to ban gas boilers in future homes from 2025, an individual policy extending to all modern gas boilers in homesteads from the mid-2030s. The newly installed heating units will need to be effectively low-carbon or converted to clean-burning fuels like hydrogen.

Members of the UK Parliament have been continually discussing climatic changes and implementing positive climatic & into future homesteads. The first step begins with the ban of gas boilers from newly built homes from the start of 2025. The best alternative? Air source heat pumps.

Barriers to the Adoption of Air Heat Pumps

There is a variety of barriers to the adoption of heat pump technology. The most significant barrier is the cost of building improvements. But, the government has announced plans to install as many as five million more air source heat pumps by 2030 with zero refurbishment costs.

In addition, the inconvenience of building works is another expense associated with heat pump installation. Nevertheless, the benefits outweigh the costs. Technology is becoming more affordable, and the future is here now.

The latest DC inverter air source heat pump models are efficient enough to meet the Future Homes Standard, intended to move all new properties away from fossil fuels. They can help the UK achieve its carbon emissions reduction targets for 2050.

The cost of air source heat pumps is expected to fall as the industry grows, but they are still far more expensive than oil or LPG boilers. The Future Homes Standard is an excellent step in the right direction for the country.

There are other barriers to using air source heat pumps. For example, some of the older air source heat pump models will freeze when the outside air temperature drops below five degrees Fahrenheit. The next problem is that the heat pump will need to defrost several times a year. This is a massive inconvenience for people, so there is a solution. A reverse heat pump can be a one-stop decarbonizer for any property.

Air source heat pumps require proper insulation in order to be effective. Without proper insulation, the system will lose heat and be less efficient than it is. It will also have to be insulated well to be effective. If the house is adequately insulated, the house's temperature will remain consistent throughout the entire year. A good combination of an air source heat pump and a well-insulated home can help save energy and money.

The main barrier to adopting air source heat pumps is the cost of refurbishment. But these improvements are not costly. Several incentives help homeowners save money and make their homes more energy-efficient.

Moreover, the system is environmentally friendly and can help save the environment in the end. The only downside is the inconvenience of building works. However, the cost of energy efficiency is well worth it if you consider air source heat pumps as the future of heating.

Despite the high installation cost, air-source heat pumps can still save on energy costs. The price of an air source heat pump is lower than that of oil and LPG boilers. This means that the installing cost of an ASHP is more affordable than traditional oil and LPG systems. In the meantime, you can save on your utility bills and live a more comfortable life. Air heating systems can be a more efficient and economical alternative to traditional home heating.

An air heating system uses 80 % less energy than electric furnaces and doesn't require an additional water heater. Air heating systems are also cleaner because they don't burn fossil fuels, which emit greenhouse gas emissions. Finally, air heating systems are cheaper to install in new homes because they only need a dedicated electrical circuit.

Air source heat pumps are the future of heating. They are cheaper than the alternative fuels used for heating. They can also be used as an air conditioning system. Various types of these devices perform both functions. It is advisable for air source heat pumps being installed in well-insulated homes. The air source pump cost depends on the size of the space that needs to be heated. A well-insulated house is more efficient and can benefit more from these products.
